Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre Emergency Shelter Donation

The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre Emergency Shelter opened its doors January 2021 as a 25 bed emergency shelter. Now with the addition of 15 new beds, they have become the largest emergency shelter in Halifax!

Through the power of social media we heard they were in need of several items to be able to handle the increased occupancy and of course we responded immediately! We have donated over $500 worth of much needed wish-list items and hope others in our amazing community can donate as well.

Below is a list of some needed items:

  • Spring/Summer clothes for all genders
  • Footwear for all genders
  • Backpacks
  • Socks/underwear
  • Juice boxes
  • Individual snack items
  • Coffee grounds/tea
  • Reusable cups
  • Plastic utensils
  • Toothpaste/razors/feminine products

We realize we are in difficult times (this is the second year we have not been able to hold our major fundraiser), but if you can, please consider helping those less fortunate – just like Olivia always did ♥️

COVID 19 Donations

Here is the glass that started it all… Jym Line Glassware Ltd. created this glass as a fundraiser to help out in their community during this tumultuous time. Each glass is $10 (taxes include) of which $5 is being donated to local area organizations in East Hants where Jym Line is located.

The glass proved to be so popular, the first run SOLD OUT in a few hours on April 15 and Tom Adams, President is Jym Line was able to donate $535.00 to the Caring and Sharing Angel Tree Food Bank on April 16! Now that’s how it’s done! Way to go Tom 👊🏼 Tom has committed to printing more glasses and is currently working on reserving orders for the next run due by April 23.

Olivia’s Trust works closely with Jym Line as they are an ardent supporter of The Trust in all ways. The Trust has decided to match Jym Line’s donations to organizations in HRM, with a focus on Dartmouth as that is Olivia’s community. Our first donation of $535.00 will be to the St. Thomas More Food Bank in East Dartmouth. Our second donation is earmarked for P.A.C.T. (Parents and Children Together) in Cole Harbour.

If you would like to help these efforts please consider buying a glass (go to the Jym Line Glassware Facebook page for details on how to purchase a glass for yourself or someone else). You can also make donations directly to the Olivia Jollota Memorial Trust with directions that your donation be reserved for COVID 19 relief and we will ensure that is where it goes.

Thank you and stay safe, Olivia’s Trust Team

Olivia’s Trust COVID 19 🦠Update

This is the time of year we excitedly put out a post announcing our upcoming annual Bowling Tournament and Silent Auction fundraiser. This event has always been held the Saturday after the May Victoria Day long weekend. While we have the alley booked for May 23rd, it is currently closed due the virus 🦠. We do not know if it will re-open by this date or what social distancing will look like at that time.

We will likely have to postpone or possibly cancel our event for the safety and well-being of our supporters. We are debating whether to run some of the components such as the ever popular Craft Beer, Wine and Spirit Board and a handmade quilt raffle. Stay tuned for updates.

Olivia’s Trust still plans to award a post-secondary scholarship to a student currently set to graduate from Prince Andrew High School in June 2020. Since schools are closed and we do not know when they will re-open, it may not be possible for students wishing to apply to get their applications in to Student Services by the May 15th deadline. Therefore, if you are a student or know of a student that will graduate this year and wish to apply for our scholarship, please send your essay along with 2 letters of recommendation directly to dale@livstrust.com for consideration.

Olivia’s Trust will soon be making donations to organizations in most need that meet our mandate. Once we have made our choices, another post will go out to let you know where your support is helping during these uncertain and challenging times.

Thank you and stay safe ~ Dale, Nicole and Tom

Phoenix Youth Shelter Pizza Party and Cookie Decorating

Our 2018 Christmas giving did not stop with our senior community! We decided to get a little more personal with the younger generation. After a wonderful suggestion by Steve Murray, we reached out to the staff of Phoenix Youth Shelter and offered to host a pizza 🍕party and cookie decorating evening 😊. Olivia would love this!!!

On Sunday, December 16 the Trustees and volunteers brought pizza, chips, fruit and vegetable platters, juice, water and cookies along with all the fixings needed to decorate to Phoenix Youth Shelter in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We got to eat (thank you for the amazing ribs and cole slaw!) chat and share Olivia. We shared why we do what we do with some wonderful people. What a great time! We can’t even begin to explain what an honour it was. Thank you for your questions and the honest, open dialogue that followed.

A great big thank you goes out to Ragan Eagle of Sweet Eagle Bakery for donating the amazing cookies the staff and residents decorated. The delicious cookies were definitely a huge hit! We saw some pretty impressive decorating going on (there may have even been a friendly competition or two 😉)

We we also honoured to do up gift bags for the youth staying at the shelter so they have something just for them this Christmas season 🎄. We included a t-shirt and bracelet with Olivia’s Signature Tree in each bag along with some treats and day-to-day items like deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, hair ties, brushes, gloves, reusable water bottle and more! We also donated bus tickets, MacDonalds gift cards and Tim Hortons gift cards!

We love giving back to organizations that support our youth – it’s exactly where Olivia would want us to focus 💗.

Bissett Court Nursing Home Donation 2018

Nothing makes us happier at The Olivia Jollota Memorial Trust than to give back to our community! As part of our annual Christmas Giving 🎄Olivia’s Trust was thrilled to be able to donate needed items to the Bissett Court Nursing Home on Chameau Crescent in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

So often our seniors do not have everything they need while living in care. That is where Olivia’s Trust got to step in! We were given a list of items that are most needed on a day-to-day basis and were more happy to provide everything they asked for – and then some!

If you are searching for a place to do some good this giving season why not approach a local nursing home in your community and reach out to see what they may need. Your gesture, no matter how small can mean the world to someone 😊

Donation for Phoenix 2017

Next up to receive some kindness this holiday season from Olivia’s Trust is Phoenix.

Olivia’s passion was helping others, especially those less fortunate. She helped many friends who had lost their homes for various reasons so we could think of no better way to honour her memory than to give to Phoenix.

Today Olivia’s Trust donated winter coats, hats, mitts, socks, toiletries and other goodies for 6 females and 6 males 🎁

If you or your family and friends are looking for a way to donate or give back you should consider Phoenix. Go to http://www.phoenixyouth.ca for their Wish List and ways to donate.

Olivia’s Legacy

As we prepare for our annual Bowling Tournament and Silent Auction fundraiser on May 27th I started to feel like I was letting Olivia down.  I began to sit with this, to try to understand where this feeling was coming from. Here is what I realized.

There have been very few opportunities to share “Olivia’s Story” with the people I want to reach the most, our youth. (I know Olivia would want others to learn from her mistake, not repeat it). The main way this happens is by being invited in to schools to share her story. I get asked by parents all the time if I would be willing to come to their child’s school and of course I say YES!!!

However, it is not that easy. It is always a challenge to get administrators to allow “Olivia’s Story” to be heard. My personal belief being they are afraid if students hear her story they will get scared or worse, they will go out do the same…  The fact is, hearing her story will not “make” anyone abuse drugs. This is a very antiquated way of thinking!  This same reason was used when Sex Education was being proposed – if we talk about it, they will do it…  I believe, if we give our youth the correct information to help them develop their critical thinking skills and make safe choices we can only help them, and society as a whole, in the long run.

As far as being scared, there is no easy, gentle or happy way to tell “Olivia’s Story”. Kids will also be upset they will be sad and they may even cry. And that’s okay. Every parent and educator I have spoken to would rather the kids hear the truth then sugar coat it.

The fact is kids as young as Grade 5 are experimenting with prescription pain pills. These kids are getting their “facts” from their friends or the Internet!  The dangers of experimenting with pills is not being taught to our students even though there is curriculum in place to assist teachers. However, the new curriculum that addresses prescription pain pills is not an outcome so it does not have to be taught!

So, even though I have not been able to share her story with our students through school presentations I know “Olivia’s Story” has been shared many times in many ways since our last bowling tournament:

June 2016, CBC News at 6 had a segment which covered the scholarship presentation at Prince Andrew High School which in turn gave me the chance to share why the work of The Trust in memory of Olivia.

Around Christmas a couple of newspaper articles fr m Wast Hants mentioned The Trust and “Olivia’s Story” which in turn caused increased traffic to our site.

In March, a short documentary titled “Live On” was created by two wonderful Kings College students, Jess Hirtle and Delaney MacKay. “Live On” was viewed during a documentary showcase on March 24 and will be submitted to the Atlantic Film Festival for a chance to be screened (link will follow at a letter date).

And over the last several months, coming up to the 5 year remembrance of Olivia’s death, people have been sharing her story via social media either directly or by copying the link to her story from our website while commenting on other stories. I have also spoken directly to many people who have popped in to my workplace. These curious individuals who asked what the items with Olivia’s Signature Tree are for likely got more than they bargained for when I shared the work of The Trust along with “Olivia’s Story” on a very personal level. These wonderful people have then gone home and shared her story with the youth in their lives!  How remarkable is all this?

Looking back now, having put all that happened in perspective, I can’t believe I ever felt like I was letting my girl down 💗
